We're Hiring: Communications Manager — Bay Resistance & Bay Rising

Communities across the Bay Area are under threat. Bay Resistance exists to fight back and we need a bold, strategic communicator to help lead that fight.

Bay Resistance is a mass organizing network mobilizing communities to resist authoritarianism and defend those most impacted. We are a regional movement organization building grassroots power across the Bay Area through base-building, electoral organizing, issue campaigns, and coalition work. Together, we engage tens of thousands of voters, volunteers, and community members across the region — and we're growing.

We're hiring a Communications Manager to sit at the heart of that work.

The Role

This is not a typical communications job. As our Communications Manager, you'll be a core leader driving day-to-day communications strategy across Bay Resistance and Bay Rising — translating frontline organizing priorities into clear, urgent narratives that move communities to action.

You'll lead media relations, manage our digital presence, coordinate press events and high-stakes political moments with coalition partners, and build communications capacity across our distributed network of member organizations. You'll work closely with our Communications Director and may supervise staff and consultants as the team grows.

This role lives at the intersection of storytelling, strategy, and resistance — and it demands someone who can move fast, stay grounded under pressure, and never lose sight of the people and communities this work is for.

What You'll Do

You'll align communications with organizing strategy to support base-building, narrative change, and mass mobilization. You'll lead rapid-response and crisis communications when the moment calls for it — and in this political climate, it often does. You'll cultivate relationships with mainstream, ethnic, community, and political media, and coach spokespeople to show up sharp and strategic when it matters most.

On the digital side, you'll manage our social media platforms, email and mobile programs, and Squarespace websites — while building out tracking, testing, and analytics to sharpen our reach. You'll capture and curate photos, video, and stories from actions and campaigns, maintaining a shared story bank that powers both rapid response and long-term narrative work.

You'll also play a critical role in building communications capacity across our network — training member organizations, supporting onboarding, and coaching members to grow their own public profiles and communications leadership.

Who You Are

You're a skilled writer and editor — equally at home drafting a press statement, an op-ed, a social post, or an organizing toolkit. You have a strong design eye and are proficient in Canva. You're self-directed, organized, and able to make smart decisions quickly when priorities compete and the stakes are high.

You have a demonstrated track record in media relations — placing stories, cultivating reporter relationships, and showing up strategically at political moments. You know how to work in coalition, not just in isolation. And at your core, you bring a deep commitment to racial, economic, gender, and environmental justice — and to building real, lasting power for directly impacted communities.

Experience with digital organizing tools like Action Network, Hustle, or Airtable is a strong plus. So is fluency in Spanish or another language widely spoken in Bay Area communities. Advanced video editing and graphic design skills, familiarity with California's movement ecosystem, and experience in rapid-response or coalition communications environments will help you hit the ground running.

The Details

Location: Downtown Oakland (full-time, in-office) Salary: $75,000 – $85,000 annually
